Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
More than 12 hours after the first smoke alarms went off, firefighters were still working to bring under control a massive fire that destroyed a warehouse at the Brewster Creek Business Park in Bartlett, a suburb west of Chicago.
The blaze broke out at Access, a secure document storage facility located at 1200 Humbracht Circle. The building was packed with boxes of documents stacked floor to ceiling, which provided plenty of fuel for the fire. According to workers, what started as a few burning boxes quickly turned into an uncontrollable inferno.
The incident began around 10 a.m., when officials said the sprinkler system initially contained the flames. However, when a series of steel racks collapsed, the situation worsened rapidly, and the warehouse was beyond saving.
In a statement, Access confirmed that all employees had safely evacuated the building and were accounted for. The company is currently cooperating with local authorities to investigate the cause of the fire.
Here's a firsthand account from Larry Shapiro:
I arrived on the scene around 10:30 a.m., when the fire was already classified as a second alarm MABAS Box. The Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU) was used to clear smoke from the warehouse after Bartlett companies had already entered the building. I mainly focused on capturing images of the large number of emergency units present, as they were beginning to wrap up operations and release most personnel, except for the Bartlett units.
At 3:45 p.m., additional resources were called in, and a Box Alarm was issued due to the intensifying fire. It was clear that this was a major incident requiring significant manpower and equipment to manage.
