Huntley FPD news

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

When it comes to the skills required to fight fires and save lives, being physically prepared is just as important as having the right training. These two key elements are what firefighters around the world are working hard to master, especially as they gear up for this year’s Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge (SFCC). Created to promote firefighter fitness and raise public awareness of the physical demands of the job, the SFCC has become one of the most respected events in the fire service community.

Firefighters are among the most dedicated public servants, and many push themselves beyond their daily duties to hone their skills and compete at the highest level. Among the top contenders this year is the 2018 Grand National Champion team from Huntley, Illinois. This team, composed of Josh Roddy, Scott Sundquist, Eric Rose, and Eric Blaser, represents the Huntley Fire team and is preparing for the 2019 season. They made history by becoming the first Illinois team to win the Grand National title at the SFCC—a competition that ESPN calls "the toughest two minutes in sports." Each member of the Huntley team has completed the challenge in under 100 seconds, placing them in the prestigious "Lion’s Den," the highest individual achievement in the event.

The SFCC features seven intense events that mirror real-life firefighting scenarios. Competitors must climb a five-story tower while wearing full gear, including a breathing apparatus and a 42-pound hose pack. They also have to hoist a second 42-pound hose roll up the tower, descend the structure hitting every step, and use a 9-pound mallet to push a 165-pound steel beam five feet. Other challenges include running a slalom course in full gear, carrying a charged 200-pound hose through saloon doors to spray a target, and finally, carrying a 175-pound mannequin 106 feet to the finish line. Every event tests strength, speed, and endurance—key traits for any firefighter on the job.

What makes the SFCC unique is its strong family focus. Many regional events include a Kids Firefighter Challenge, where children can wear specially sized helmets and turnout coats and participate in scaled-down versions of the main events. It's a great way to introduce young people to the fire service and inspire future generations.

The competition is open to all active firefighters, whether they want to compete individually or as part of a team of three to five members. There are even options for relay and tandem teams at each event. Registration is now open for the season’s kickoff at the FDIC in Indianapolis, Indiana, from April 11–13. Firefighters interested in joining can sign up online at www.firefighterchallenge.com. With so much at stake, the 2019 season promises to be one of the most exciting yet.
