Of interest … Ford ambulance chassis

Excerpts from motorbiscuit.com:

Emergency vehicles are a common sight on the roads, and if you've ever been inside an ambulance, you know how crucial it is for them to be equipped with all the necessary tools and to be able to move quickly and safely to the hospital. So, which automaker produces the most ambulances, and why are they considered ideal for emergency transport? You might not be surprised to learn that it's Ford. Here's what makes their emergency vehicles stand out.

Ford is the leading manufacturer of ambulance chassis in the U.S., supplying a wide range of models used by emergency service providers. Most Type I ambulances are built on a pickup truck chassis, and American Emergency Vehicles—known for its high-quality units—uses primarily Ford chassis. These include the F-150, F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-650, which provide the strength and durability needed for demanding situations.

Out of the approximately 78,000 ambulances in the U.S., many are Type II models, built on van chassis. There are also Type III ambulances, which use smaller van chassis, and medium-duty versions designed for more specialized needs.

For Type I ambulances, Ford offers three main chassis options: the F-350, F-450, and F-550. These come with either a 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine or a 7.3-liter gas engine. The Type I Medium Duty version provides even more flexibility, with 11 different wheelbase lengths and three cab configurations. It also features powerful engine options, including a 6.7-liter V8 turbodiesel that can deliver up to 330 horsepower and 725 lb-ft of torque.

The Type I Medium Duty ambulance includes advanced safety features like hydraulic or air brakes, traction control, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and optional rear suspension packages. Driver assistance technologies such as electronic stability control are also available, making these vehicles safer and more reliable in emergencies.

Type II ambulances are more compact and typically based on a van chassis. Ford’s Type II model uses the Ford Transit van with an Ambulance Prep Package and a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. They come in various roof heights and body lengths, along with optional privacy glass for patient comfort and confidentiality.

Type III ambulances are built on cutaway truck chassis, and Ford offers the Transit cutaway chassis as a base. This model also includes the Ambulance Prep Package and a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It comes in three wheelbase lengths, offering versatility for different medical needs. Some Type III units also use the E-350 or E-450 Super Duty cutaway chassis, featuring a 7.3-liter V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission for added power and performance.
