Pleasantview Fire District news

Excerpts from woodtv.com:

Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was tragically killed by a passing vehicle while responding to an accident on eastbound I-94 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. after heavy rains, when the Comstock Township Department of Fire & Rescue was called to investigate two reported crashes near mile marker 81. Upon arrival, they found an empty vehicle with no injuries reported. As the crew prepared to leave, a vehicle lost control and struck Chief Switalski, who was near the rear of his rescue unit.

Emergency responders at the scene attempted to resuscitate him but were unable to save his life. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was taken to Borgess Methodist Hospital with injuries.

Switalski had served over 30 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in Illinois before moving to West Michigan in 2013 to be closer to his daughters, who were attending Western Michigan University. He was sworn in as fire chief of Comstock Township on July 1, 2013, following the retirement of a long-serving chief who had led the department for more than 40 years.

Condolences poured in quickly from across the fire service community. Many remembered him as a dedicated leader, mentor, and friend.

Thanks, Keith

Chief Ed Switalski retired in 2013 after 34 years with the Pleasantview Fire District and was 55 years old. He had recently transitioned into his role as Fire Chief in Comstock Township.

From Art Zern:

Ed was one of the most genuine and passionate firefighters I've ever known. He was a great instructor and a true character. After retiring as a Battalion Chief from Pleasantview Fire District about four years ago, he took on the role of Fire Chief in Comstock Township, Michigan. Many of your readers may have taken a class from him through SUFD, NIPSTA, or the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Holly, and his daughters Emily and Allison.

Excerpts from firefightersclosecalls.com:

We are heartbroken to share that the fire service has lost a true hero—Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski—while on duty last night. At approximately 10:30 p.m., Chief Switalski was standing at the rear of his command vehicle returning equipment when another vehicle struck him and the rear of his unit.

Despite the best efforts of Comstock firefighters and EMS personnel, Chief Switalski succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His death is a devastating loss for the entire fire service community. It’s worth noting that this section of I-94 has a history of tragic incidents, making it all the more heartbreaking.

Chief Switalski was a respected figure across Illinois, Michigan, and the nation. Among his many honors, he received the Medal of Valor in 1989 for his actions during the line-of-duty death of a fellow firefighter with the Pleasantview Fire District. He will be deeply missed by his family, his colleagues, and the broader fire service.

Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Holly, his daughters Emily and Allison, and the entire Comstock Township Fire Department.
