With the implementation of the tire labeling method and the improvement of energy saving and emission reduction targets in many countries and regions, the high performance of tires has become an inevitable trend. Solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) can be used as a tread rubber for high-performance tires to improve overall tire performance. However, the current domestic SSBR is only equivalent to the first or second generation of foreign products, and the third, fourth or even fifth generation SSBR has been developed abroad. Moreover, domestic SSBR has a certain gap with the requirements of tire companies in terms of product serialization and quality. Therefore, it is imperative for SSBR manufacturers to increase their technical investment, increase the number of SSBR products, and improve product quality.

In recent years, with the rapid development of polymer synthesis and molecular design technology, the quality and performance of SSBR have been continuously improved. Although China's SSBR has a certain scale of production capacity, but the device utilization rate is not high, domestic users are also unstable, and mostly for shoe-making enterprises. Due to cost and processing technology considerations, most of China's tire companies use latex styrene-butadiene rubber, which is slightly cheaper, and the high-performance SSBR is used less. Experts believe that there are three main points. First, it is subject to the processing and application conditions of domestic tires. At present, there are only a few large tire companies in China engaged in the application research of SSBR. Most small and medium-sized tire enterprises do not have application in processing equipment and cooperation technology. The conditions of SSBR; second, the proportion of domestic high-end cars is small, the demand for high-performance tires is not urgent, the demand for SSBR is not too big; the third is that the domestic SSBR brand is less, and the product performance cannot meet the requirements of various products.

The EU Tire Labeling Act will take effect on November 1, 2012. Car tires, light truck tires, truck tires and bus tires sold in the EU must be labelled to indicate the fuel efficiency, rolling noise and wet grip rating of the tire. . In addition, with the increase in national energy conservation and emission reduction, the advantages of SSBR in reducing rolling resistance and improving wet grip are highlighted. In this context, it is an urgent task for domestic producers of styrene-butadiene rubber to develop suitable product grades according to the needs of users, strengthen application research, and do a good job in technical services and after-sales service.

In recent years, many researches and developments and technological reforms of styrene-butadiene rubber have been carried out in China. The Institute of Chemical Engineering of Dalian University of Technology and Yanshan Petrochemical Research Institute have synthesized butadiene-styrene block copolymers with n-butyllithium as initiator. Compared with common solution styrene-butadiene rubber, it not only has good physical and mechanical properties, but also has low rolling resistance and high wet skid resistance.

A downstream related project of Shanghai Secco's 900,000-ton ethylene project – an annual output of 100,000 tons of styrene-butadiene rubber is the largest set of similar capacity in China. The project utilizes butadiene and styrene raw materials supplied by Shanghai Secco Ethylene Project. The company uses the solution process of Japan Asahi Kasei Co., Ltd. to produce two kinds of products: styrene-butadiene rubber and low-cis polybutadiene rubber. The production scale is low-cis polybutadiene rubber of 58,500 tons/year and dissolved polystyrene-butadiene rubber of 41,500 tons/year.

Sinopec Baling Petrochemical Company has also adjusted from the refined serialization of SBS grades, and adapted some SBS units to achieve the purpose of joint production of SSBR and low cis polybutadiene rubber (LCBR). On July 25, 2011, the Baling Petrochemical Synthetic Rubber Division successfully produced 4.32 tons of SSBR new products on the thermoplastic rubber SBS unit, and all the indicators met the quality standards of similar foreign products. At the end of 2011, Baling Petrochemical produced 1.5 tons of SSBR new grade products, and its product performance reached the standards of similar products of LANXESS.
