Commercial fire and haz mat incident in Park Ridge, 7-17-19 (more)

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

On Thursday, the Park Ridge fire marshal issued a citation against a property owner for failing to report the storage of a large quantity of hazardous materials before a major fire broke out. Firefighters fought a massive blaze that consumed a former Harvey’s Marathon gas station located at Northwest Highway and Oakton Street. The owner did not post warning signs or inform the fire department that 45 tons of calcium peroxide were stored both inside and near the building. The violation carries a $500 fine.

The calcium peroxide was intended for soil decontamination on the site, which had previously operated as a gas station for many years. The property had been vacant since approximately 2013. Park Ridge officials identified the owner as Raza Holdings LLC.

The fire department classified the calcium peroxide as a dangerous substance that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, resulting in two firefighters sustaining minor burns. The Park Ridge Fire Department and other responding agencies are expected to seek reimbursement for equipment damage and labor costs. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Cleanup efforts continued on Friday, with oversight from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. A plastic-lined sand berm was installed on the property on Thursday, and cleanup is expected to last through the weekend. While the IEPA does not regulate the storage of calcium peroxide, local municipalities may have their own requirements. Any remaining material not destroyed in the fire cannot be used for the planned soil cleanup.
