Commercial fire and haz mat incident in Park Ridge, 7-17-19 (more)

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

The Park Ridge fire marshal issued a citation on Thursday for failing to inform the fire department about the storage of hazardous materials at a site before it caught fire. Firefighters fought a large blaze that engulfed a former Harvey’s Marathon gas station located at Northwest Highway and Oakton Street. The property owner did not post warning signs or notify the fire department that 45 tons of calcium peroxide were stored in and around the building. The violation came with a $500 fine.

The calcium peroxide, which was meant for cleaning soil contamination on the property due to its long history as a gas station, had been stored there for years. The property had been vacant since around 2013. The city of Park Ridge identified the owner as Raza Holdings LLC.

The fire department has determined that the calcium peroxide contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, resulting in two firefighters suffering minor burns. Local fire departments involved in the response are expected to seek reimbursement for equipment damage and labor costs. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Cleanup continued on Friday, with oversight from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. A plastic-lined sand berm was installed on Thursday, and cleanup was expected to continue through the weekend. The IEPA does not regulate the storage of calcium peroxide, which falls under local municipal laws. Any remaining material that wasn’t destroyed in the fire cannot be used for the planned soil decontamination.

The incident highlights the importance of proper hazardous material management and communication with emergency services. As investigations continue, residents and officials remain concerned about the potential environmental and safety risks associated with such substances. Local authorities have urged property owners to comply with all regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
