Historic 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-25-79

This is a message from Steve Redick:

Here's some radio traffic from a 3-11 alarm at a Disaster Plan 3 incident at the infamous 6531 Lowe. This happened early in the morning while my dad was chief in the 12th Battalion. The chief who usually took over, Bill Foran, was still on duty in the big buggy and hadn't been relieved yet, so he was responding as the division marshal. The captain of Truck 20, who had some classic radio replies, was Richard Fitzpatrick. The voice of the Englewood office was Harry Haddon in his prime. The building had extremely long hallways, and masks were barely being used at that time—people were just hanging around everywhere. It was quite the scene.

It’s amazing how much things have changed since then. Back in those days, communication was mostly through radios, and there wasn’t the same level of coordination or safety equipment we have today. The photos give a real sense of what it was like back then—chaos, confusion, but also a strong sense of duty among the firefighters. These kinds of historical accounts help us understand the evolution of emergency response and the bravery of those who came before us.
