Historic 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-25-79

This is a message from Steve Redick:

Here's the radio traffic from a 3-11 alarm with a Disaster Plan 3 at the infamous 6531 Lowe building. This happened early in the morning while my dad was chief of the 12th Battalion. The chief he usually relieved, Bill Foran, was on duty in the big truck and hadn't been relieved yet, so he was responding as the division marshal. The captain of Truck 20, who had some classic radio replies, was Richard Fitzpatrick. The voice coming from the Englewood office belonged to Harry Haddon in his prime. The building had extremely long hallways, and masks weren’t widely used back then—people were just hanging around everywhere. It was quite a scene.

These photos give a real sense of what it was like during that chaotic morning. It’s amazing how much has changed over the years, both in firefighting techniques and in the way we document these events. It's a rare glimpse into the past, and I'm glad Steve shared this with us. If you ever get the chance to hear the actual radio traffic, it's an incredible experience—full of tension, urgency, and a bit of history in the making.
