New contract for Downers Grove

The Chicago Tribune recently published an article detailing a new three-year contract for firefighters in Downers Grove, which includes gradual salary increases over the next three years. The village council approved the agreement on August 5 with a 5-1 vote, marking a significant step forward for the fire department. According to the terms of the contract, firefighters will receive base pay raises of 3% this year, followed by 2% in 2015 and 1% in 2016. The union, led by President Rob Pekelder, overwhelmingly ratified the deal on July 24, representing 70 full-time members including firefighters, paramedics, engineers, lieutenants, captains, and the director of emergency medical services. While the percentage increases are set across experience levels, the actual raises for employees can be much higher as they move through their career steps. For instance, a starting firefighter/paramedic will see their salary rise from $63,787 to $65,701 this year—a 3% increase. By 2016, that figure is expected to reach $67,685. However, those with more experience will see even steeper increases. A firefighter with two years of service could earn $73,439 this year, rising to $79,196 in 2015, a 7.8% raise. Similarly, a four-year veteran might earn $81,717 this year, up from $79,337, while a firefighter/paramedic with the same tenure could make $86,621, compared to $84,098 last year. Additionally, all union members who reach the top of their salary range will be eligible for one-time bonuses between $750 and $1,500 during the contract’s term, depending on their level of experience. The contract also prohibits any form of strike participation or endorsement by union members. Commissioner Bob Barnett, who voted against the agreement, expressed concerns about the long-term financial implications. He criticized the lack of flexibility should the economy decline, stating, “Once again, we’ve put into our contract conditions that commit our residents to pay for pay increases with no recourse if the economy tanks.” He added, “Our only way out of this would be to fire people.” The contract was backdated to May, meaning that the 3% raise for union members over the past three months will be issued as a lump sum in an upcoming paycheck. Future raises will take effect in May each year, ensuring a consistent timeline for salary adjustments. Thanks, Dan.
