Of interest … Ford ambulance chassis

Excerpts from motorbiscuit.com:

Emergency vehicles are everywhere, and if you've ever been inside an ambulance, you know how essential they are. They're packed with life-saving equipment and designed to get patients to the hospital quickly and safely. But have you ever wondered which manufacturer builds the most ambulances? The answer might surprise you—it's Ford. Here's a closer look at what makes Ford emergency vehicles so reliable.

Ford is the leading producer of ambulance chassis in the U.S., and their vehicles are trusted by emergency services across the country. Most Type I ambulances are built on a pickup truck chassis, and American Emergency Vehicles—known for its high-quality units—uses primarily Ford chassis like the F-150, F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-650. These models provide the durability and power needed for critical transport situations.

Out of the roughly 78,000 ambulances in the U.S., many fall into the Type II category, which are built on van chassis. There are also Type III models, which use smaller van chassis, and medium-duty ambulances that offer more flexibility and capacity.

For Type I ambulances, Ford offers three main chassis options: the F-350, F-450, and F-550. These come with either a 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine or a 7.3-liter gas engine. There's also the Type I Medium Duty chassis, available in 11 wheelbase lengths and three cab configurations. It features a powerful 6.7-liter V8 turbodiesel engine that can deliver up to 330 horsepower and 725 lb-ft of torque, making it ideal for heavy-duty use.

The Type I Medium Duty ambulance also includes advanced features such as hydraulic or air brakes with traction control, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and optional rear suspension packages. Driver assistance technology, including electronic stability control, is also available to enhance safety and performance.

Type II ambulances are more compact and are typically based on van chassis. Ford’s Type II model uses the Ford Transit van equipped with an Ambulance Prep Package and a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It offers two roof heights and three body lengths, along with optional privacy glass for added comfort and discretion.

Type III ambulances are built on cutaway chassis, and for Ford, this means the Ford Transit cutaway. These units come with the same Ambulance Prep Package and a 3.5-liter V6 engine matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission. They also offer three different wheelbase lengths for customization. In addition, some Type III ambulances use the Ford E-350 or E-450 Super Duty cutaway chassis, which feature a 7.3-liter V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission for even greater power and reliability.
