Pleasantview Fire District news

Excerpts from woodtv.com:

Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was tragically killed by a passing vehicle while responding to an unknown accident on eastbound I-94, according to Kalamazoo County authorities.

Oshtemo Township Fire Department Chief Mark Barnes explained that the Comstock Township Fire & Rescue team had been called to investigate two crashes near mile marker 81 on I-94 around 10:30 p.m. after heavy rains. Upon arrival, they found an empty vehicle and no injuries reported.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said that as fire crews were preparing to leave the scene, a vehicle lost control and struck Switalski, who was standing near the rear of his rescue unit.

Emergency responders at the scene attempted to resuscitate Switalski but were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the at-fault vehicle was taken to Borgess Methodist Hospital with injuries sustained in the crash.

Switalski had served more than 30 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in Illinois before relocating to West Michigan in 2013 to be closer to his daughters, who were attending Western Michigan University. He was sworn in as Fire Chief of Comstock Township on July 1, 2013, succeeding a chief who had led the department for over 40 years.

Sympathy messages poured in quickly on Thursday morning, as the community mourned the loss of a respected leader.

Thanks, Keith

Chief Ed Switalski retired after 34 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in 2013 and was 55 years old.

From Art Zern:

Ed was a great guy—firefighter, instructor, and a real character. He retired as a Battalion Chief from the Pleasantview Fire District (after 24 years) about four years ago, then took the role of Fire Chief in Comstock Township, Michigan. Many of your readers may have known Ed or taken a class he taught through SUFD, NIPSTA, or the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Holly and his daughters Emily and Allison.

Excerpts from firefightersclosecalls.com:

We are heartbroken to share the news that the fire service has lost a true friend in the line of duty. At approximately 10:30 p.m. last night, Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was struck and killed while working at a crash scene on I-94. He was standing at the rear of his command vehicle returning equipment when another vehicle entered the scene and struck both him and the vehicle.

Comstock firefighters and the entire EMS system did everything possible to save his life, but the injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Despite following all best practices, the driver managed to bypass a blocking engine, leading to this tragic incident.

This stretch of I-94 has a long history of serious incidents and tragedies. While more details will come in the days ahead, Chief Switalski was a true hero and beloved figure across the fire service in Illinois, Michigan, and throughout the U.S.

Among his many achievements, he was awarded the Medal of Valor in 1989 for his actions during the line-of-duty death of a firefighter while serving with the Pleasantview FPD in Illinois.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Holly, his daughters Emily and Allison, and the entire Comstock Fire Department family.

Adipic Dihydrazide

ADH is a high-melting powder compound prepared from the reaction of organic acids with hydrazine. It can be used as a latent curing agent for epoxy resins (EP). The coating film of powder coating prepared with EP/SPH as adhesive system has very good flexibility, water resistance, weather resistance, corrosion resistance, insulation and decorative ability. At home and abroad, it is an indispensable latent curing agent, especially in the manufacture of excellent high-temperature fast solid heavy duty powders and in the fields of petroleum pipelines, aerospace, aviation oil, etc. It has very ideal effect in increasing strength of epoxy powder and FRP products. Especially combined with diacetone acrylamide (DAAM), it can be made into high-performance water-soluble paint.
