3-Alarm fire in South Barrington, 5/18/15

The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to a residential fire at 2 Windridge Road in South Barrington on May 18, 2015, around 1:00 PM. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered parts of the cedar shake roof on fire and immediately requested a MABAS Box Alarm. Due to strong winds, the alarm was escalated to a second alarm, and then to a third as crews were pulled back for an exterior attack. Multiple handlines were deployed, with some units applying foam to control the flames. After a section of the roof was burned away, firefighters re-entered the structure to locate and extinguish hot spots. A significant smoldering fire pit was also found in the backyard, located upwind from the house. Several fire departments and emergency services were mobilized to the scene, including Barrington Countryside FPD with two engines and two tenders. Additional units came from Barrington, Lake Zurich, Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Hanover Park, West Dundee, Schaumburg, and Carpentersville. Truck companies from Hoffman Estates, McHenry Twp, Countryside, and Palatine joined the effort, along with squads from Libertyville and Cary. Ambulances from Buffalo Grove and Long Grove, as well as tenders from Long Grove, McHenry Twp, Nunda Rural, Crystal Lake, Prospect Heights, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Bartlett, Wauconda, and Rutland-Dundee, were also present. The MABAS Air 5 and the MESS Canteen provided additional support. Several local contributors and media personnel were on-site documenting the incident. A number of high-quality images captured the intensity of the fire and the coordinated response. These photos, taken by Larry Shapiro and Steve Redick, show firefighters using large hoses, applying foam, working on the roof, and managing the fire pit. There are also shots of various fire trucks and equipment, including a Freightliner fire truck, an E-One engine, and a Metz tower ladder.
