The Daily Herald recently featured a heartwarming story about a charity cook-off taking place in Lincolnshire, aimed at supporting a young girl battling cancer. This weekend, local police officers and firefighters will swap their usual gear for cooking tools as they come together to raise funds for 6-year-old Ava Lee, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia earlier this year.
The event, organized by the Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, will take place on September 27 at the village hall located at 1 Olde Half Day Road. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants will compete in a barbecue showdown, serving up classic favorites like ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket. The friendly competition is not just about good food — it’s also a chance for first responders to give back to the community.
“Firefighters are often known for being great cooks,†said Brian Balinski, a Lincolnshire police officer and one of the event organizers. “We have some officers who really enjoy cooking, and we thought this would be a fun way to use our skills for a good cause.â€
Fire Chief Fred Krueger, who is leading the fire department's team, is confident in his crew’s culinary abilities. “We’re known as great cooks, and they’re known as great eaters,†he joked. “They’re really outmatched.â€
The fundraiser is supporting Ava Lee, who lives near Lincolnshire. She needs a bone marrow transplant to help her body produce healthy blood cells, but so far, no matching donor has been found. Her family has been going through a tough time, and the community has rallied around them.
“Ava’s story has given us the perfect opportunity to go above and beyond,†Balinski said. “Our main goal is to find a bone marrow match for her. We’ve been working on blood drives for years, but this event gives us a chance to make a bigger impact.â€
Part of the event includes raising money for the Be The Match program, which helps connect patients with potential donors. Testing for marrow donation is simple — it only takes a cheek swab — but the process can be expensive. To help cover these costs, the event will offer samples of the delicious dishes made by the teams.
Ava, a first-grader at Pritchett Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, was diagnosed after she developed a persistent skin infection that led to further medical tests. She has been undergoing chemotherapy for seven months, and without a bone marrow match, her next step may involve an umbilical cord blood transplant.
“We’re hoping to get at least 40 blood donors from this event,†Balinski added. “We really hope people will feel moved to participate and help Ava.â€
Ava’s mother, Esther Lee, expressed deep gratitude for the support from the community. “We are truly honored and humbled by all the love and kindness shown to us,†she said.
