The Daily Herald recently published an article about a heartwarming charity cook-off taking place in Lincolnshire, where local police officers and firefighters are stepping away from their usual duties to support a young girl battling cancer.
On September 27, crews from the Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District will come together at the village hall on 1 Olde Half Day Road for a friendly barbecue competition. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring mouthwatering dishes like ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket.
"Firefighters are often known for being great cooks," said Brian Balinski, a Lincolnshire police officer and one of the event organizers. "We have some officers who are really passionate about cooking, and we thought this would be a fun way to showcase our skills while helping a good cause."
Fire Chief Fred Krueger is confident his team will come out on top. "We're known as great cooks, and they're known as great eaters," he joked. "They’re really outmatched."
The event is raising funds for 6-year-old Ava Lee, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in February. Ava, who lives near Lincolnshire, needs a bone marrow transplant to help her body produce healthy blood cells. Unfortunately, no family members match her, so a stranger’s donation is desperately needed.
Balinski explained that finding a donor can be challenging due to the cost involved. To make it easier for people to get tested, the cook-off will offer samples of the food, with proceeds going toward covering registration fees with the National Marrow Donor Program's Be The Match initiative.
Ava, a first-grader at Pritchett Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, was diagnosed after her mother noticed a persistent skin infection. She has been undergoing chemotherapy for seven months, and without a bone marrow match, doctors may need to consider an umbilical cord blood transplant next.
"We’re hoping to get at least 40 new donors from this event," Balinski said. "We just want to reach out to people and inspire them to take part in something meaningful."
Esther Lee, Ava’s mother, expressed deep gratitude for the community's support. "We’re honored and humbled by everything that’s being done for Ava," she said. "It means the world to us."
