Mercedes-Benz successfully won the bid to deliver 39 Atego 1729 (Euro 5 emission standards) to the Colombian capital and the largest city in Bogotá to update its garbage collection and urban sanitation fleet. The newly delivered vehicles are assembled at the San Bernardo-Du Camp plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and are equipped with Allison automatic transmissions.

The newly purchased Atego trucks were delivered to two sanitation companies, LIME (Limpieza Metropolitana SA) and Bogotá Limpia, highlighting the global trend of using fully automatic transmissions for sanitation vehicles.
Garbage trucks need to withstand heavy loads, and they must withstand frequent start-stop operating conditions, but they can't malfunction. According to Antônio Valverde, maintenance manager of LIME, “Because there are many problems in the use of vehicles with dry clutches, it is a natural decision to use automatic trucks. Vehicles equipped with Allison transmissions have been used since 2003 to 2010. Since then, this is the second time we have enabled automatic transmission vehicles. Our good experience has made us want to continue this wonderful experience."

Another significant advantage of the Allison transmission for the company is the driver's comfort. In addition, Allison transmissions avoid frequent manual shifts to prevent damage to the vehicle's transmission system caused by human error or improper operation.
With a wheelbase of 4,800 mm and a OM 926 LA 6-cylinder engine, the Atego 1729 has a power of 286 hp and a torque of 1,120 Nm. It is suitable for 19 cubic meters of compressed garbage trucks. The vehicles exported to Colombia are equipped with an Allison 3000 series six-speed automatic transmission with a power take-off interface.
