Toyota Research Institute develops a virtual mobile/remote presence robot

With the Olympics held in Japan next year, Toyota has developed and demonstrated a variety of robots, ready to provide services during the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics to help "mobility for all".

The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) launched a "remote-rendering robot" called the T-TR1 for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, providing users with a virtual reality that is close to life-size. The T-TR1 is equipped with a large screen, a 360° camera and multiple 3D sensing systems, including at least two depth cameras and a lidar on the pedestal, designed to give you a near-life virtual presence.

- The T-TR1 is a virtual mobile/remote presence robot developed by the Toyota Research Institute of the United States. It is equipped with a camera on a large display.

- By projecting a user's image from a remote location, the robot will help that person feel more physically present in the robot's position.

- With the T-TR1, Toyota will actually experience the Olympic Games with others who are unable to participate in the Olympics due to physical reasons.

Toyota has not yet announced the details of the robot, and it is expected to solve the delay-sensitive problem in view of the connection problems that occur in a large number of people. However, we can still infer something from video and other information. The ball at the top of the robot is a 360-degree camera (looks like the Insta360 Pro), which helps remote users understand the surrounding environment as clearly as they are in person. In addition, the TR1 is equipped with multiple 3D sensing systems, including at least two depth cameras and a lidar. It is unclear whether the robot is autonomous or semi-autonomous (for example, using sensors to automatically avoid obstacles), and since the video does not demonstrate how to control it, it is difficult to make a guess.

We (the author, hereinafter referred to as me) really like the huge screen, which increases the possibility of making remote on-site robots practical. The robot can move fast enough, and it is safe to move in a carpeted meeting room reality environment, although it requires sensors, but these are great.

We should emphasize that Toyota has only released the minimum information about the T-TR1, although we are told that as the 2020 Olympics approach, we can expect more information, so let us wait and see.
