I just took a drive over to the 2-11 district on the near west side earlier today. The fire broke out in a really beautiful building, a classic Greystone structure measuring about 50 by 100 feet. From what I could see, it seemed like the majority of the fire was concentrated on the second floor and in the attic area. Firefighting teams were already inside trying to make progress with their attack, while Truck 36 was busy cutting multiple ventilation holes on the roof.
It was one of those bitterly cold and windy mornings, and I noticed something interesting—whenever the wind picked up, the fire seemed to intensify significantly. That's always a challenge for firefighters, especially in situations like this where the structure is older and potentially more vulnerable.
Check out these photos I snapped from the scene. The first one shows thick smoke billowing out from a large home, capturing the intensity of the situation. Another image highlights the firefighters working hard to vent the roof as smoke continues to pour out. You can also see some dramatic shots of flames bursting through the second-floor windows of what appeared to be quite a luxurious mansion.
There are several other images that give you a sense of the scale of this operation. In one picture, you can spot Engine 44 from the Chicago Fire Department in action, and another shows Engine 103 alongside Squad 2A Snorkel. These visuals really capture the coordinated efforts needed to manage such a blaze.
It’s always tough to see a fire like this, but it’s inspiring to witness how quickly the firefighters spring into action under challenging conditions. Here’s hoping they manage to bring it under control soon without any major damage or injuries.
