Excerpts from the City of Evanston:
On Thursday, January 14, at approximately 1:07 p.m., Evanston firefighters were called to the 300 block of Dempster Street in response to a reported automatic fire alarm in a multi-story residential building.
Upon arrival, the first responding units encountered moderate smoke and fire conditions on the third floor. Thanks to a quick and aggressive offensive firefighting approach combined with the activation of the building’s fire sprinklers, the fire was quickly brought under control and contained to the unit of origin within about 10 minutes of the crews arriving on scene.
A middle-aged woman was found unresponsive inside the apartment, without a pulse and not breathing. Firefighters immediately extracted her from the building and initiated resuscitation efforts on-site. During transport to a local hospital, paramedics successfully revived her. She is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.
Additional resources from nearby municipalities were dispatched to support the Evanston Fire Department during the incident, helping to maintain station coverage while EFD units focused on controlling the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities.
