Springfield FD adding small squads

The Springfield Fire Department has placed a new order with Alexis Fire Equipment for two small rescue squads built on Ford F-550 chassis. This move is aimed at reducing the wear and tear on their larger, more expensive fire apparatus by using these smaller units to respond to medical emergencies. According to an article published in the StateJournal Register, the department is taking steps to modernize its fleet and improve efficiency. The article highlights that Fire Chief Ken Fustin explained the decision was made because approximately 60% of the department's calls are medical-related. By deploying smaller "squads," the department hopes to extend the lifespan of their main fire engines and trucks. The two vehicles were approved during last year’s budget process, and the department purchased two 2012 Ford F-550 chassis from Landmark Ford. These will be custom-built with rescue bodies by Alexis Fire Equipment, which submitted the lowest bid. The total cost for the two units came out to $200,822. Chief Fustin has already requested an additional $125,000 in next year’s budget for a third rescue vehicle, with the goal of having all three units operational by the end of December. He estimates that this shift will reduce the number of calls handled by full-sized fire trucks and engines by 4,000 to 5,000 annually. In 2011, the department responded to 16,431 calls for service, with nearly 9,527 of those being medical-related—about 58% of total calls. This initiative reflects a growing trend among fire departments nationwide to use specialized, smaller units for non-fire emergencies, allowing resources to be used more efficiently. The new squads will allow firefighters to respond faster and more effectively to medical incidents while preserving the longevity of their primary equipment. You can read the full article here.
