The Springfield Fire Department has placed an order with Alexis Fire Equipment for two small rescue squads built on Ford F-550 chassis. The goal is to assist in responding to medical emergencies, allowing the department to reduce the wear and tear on their larger, more expensive fire apparatus. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to optimize resources and improve response efficiency.
According to an article published by the *State Journal Register*, the department plans to expand its fleet this year with these smaller units, known as "squads." Fire Chief Ken Fustin explained that these vehicles will help extend the lifespan of the department’s main fire engines and trucks. He noted that roughly 60% of the department's calls are medical-related, making it essential to have dedicated units for such emergencies.
The purchase of the two rescue vehicles was approved during last year’s budget process. The department acquired two used 2012 Ford F-550 chassis from Landmark Ford and is now working with Alexis Fire Equipment to install custom rescue bodies. Alexis submitted the lowest bid, and the total cost for the two units came out to $200,822.
Chief Fustin has already requested an additional $125,000 for next year’s budget to acquire a third squad. His aim is to have all three units operational by the end of December. Once fully deployed, he estimates that the department’s larger fire trucks will handle between 4,000 and 5,000 fewer calls each year.
In 2011, the Springfield Fire Department responded to 16,431 calls for service, with approximately 9,527 of those being medical-related—accounting for about 58% of all incidents. This data highlights the growing need for specialized units that can quickly respond to non-fire emergencies without overburdening the main fleet.
