This just happened earlier today, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around the details. Around 2 PM, Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 89 got into a pretty serious accident at the intersection of 74th and Morgan. Witnesses say the ambulance was responding to an emergency call with its lights and siren on, but unfortunately, it ended up colliding with an SUV.
From what I’ve gathered so far, the ambulance was carrying five people at the time of the crash—a paramedic driving, another paramedic in the back tending to a patient, along with two family members who were accompanying the patient. The SUV also had one person inside, and things got so intense that they had to use special tools to extract them from the vehicle. It’s scary stuff.
Thankfully, none of the injuries seem to be life-threatening. Still, all six individuals involved were rushed to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. From the photos I’ve seen, both the ambulance and the SUV took quite a beating. The front side of the ambulance looks especially battered, and the SUV ended up resting awkwardly near a traffic light after the impact.
A colleague of mine, Tim Olk, happened to be nearby and snapped some shots after the initial chaos died down. His photos really capture the extent of the damage. You can see one of the ambulances’ tires completely flattened, and there’s visible crumpling along the entire driver’s side. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate, even for first responders who are constantly rushing to help others.
The Chicago Tribune has an article out now with more details, including a picture from the scene. If you want to check it out, here’s the link. And if you’re interested in seeing more of Tim’s photos, they’re available here as well.
It’s always tough to hear about accidents like this, especially involving emergency personnel who put their lives on the line every day. Let’s hope everyone involved makes a full recovery soon.
