Chicago FD assists CPD with protesters

A major protest took place in downtown Chicago on Saturday as police leaders from around the world met for an annual conference at McCormick Place. The demonstration was focused on racial justice and aimed to draw attention to ongoing issues of police accountability and community relations.

Several dozen people were arrested during the protests, many of whom were part of a sit-in that blocked traffic in the middle of the street. Their goal was to disrupt the largest gathering of public safety officials in the country, which brought together over 14,000 officers.

The protest started with a march from the Chicago Police Department headquarters at 35th and Michigan to McCormick Place, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police held its annual event. Organized by local community groups, the demonstration called for a shift in how police departments engage with communities of color and urged more investment in social services rather than law enforcement.

"We want our voices to be heard by this powerful organization that shapes policies," said Maria Hadden, a protester. "Black lives matter, and we are demanding real change."

Another group staged a sit-in near Cermak and Indiana, blocking the road for several hours. Police eventually arrested about a dozen protesters after they refused to move, highlighting the tension between demonstrators and law enforcement during the event.
