Prospect Heights history

Here's a message from Deputy Chief Drew Smith:

Below are some pages from an old Prospect Heights Fire Department logbook. While many fire departments still maintain handwritten logs, this practice was discontinued here by 1981. The first working fire entry in the book was made by Captain Ron Olsen, who later became a deputy chief. After retiring from that position, he continued to serve with the PHFD on a part-time basis as a fire inspector.

Chief Olsen also made the second entry in the log. Additional notes were added by Lieutenant Warren Lippert and Captain Norm Bittner. Interestingly, Lt. Lippert’s son, Dean Lippert, is a retired firefighter from Arlington Heights. It also seems that around November 1, 1971, the PHFD adopted the Code 1, 2, 3, 4 system that many fire departments use today. I believe this system originated with the Elk Grove Village Fire Department.

These pages offer a rare glimpse into the past of our department and remind us of the dedication and traditions that have shaped the Prospect Heights Fire District over the years. It's fascinating to see how much has changed, yet how much of our core mission remains the same.
