Prospect Heights history

Here’s a message from Deputy Chief Drew Smith:

Below are some pages from an old Prospect Heights Fire Department logbook. While many fire departments still maintain handwritten logs, this practice was discontinued here by 1981. The first fire entry was recorded by Captain Ron Olsen, who later became a deputy chief. He retired from that position but continues to work part-time as a fire inspector with the PHFD.

Chief Olsen also made the second entry in the log. Additional notes were added by Lieutenant Warren Lippert and Captain Norm Bittner. Interestingly, Lt. Lippert’s son, Dean Lippert, is a retired firefighter from Arlington Heights. It seems that around November 1, 1971, the PHFD adopted the Code 1, 2, 3, 4 system, which is now used by many fire departments across the country. I believe this system originated from the Elk Grove Village Fire Department.

It's always interesting to see how things have evolved over time, especially when it comes to communication and record-keeping. The use of coded entries like Code 1, 2, 3, 4 shows how important standardized procedures were even back then. It's a reminder of the dedication and professionalism that has been a hallmark of the Prospect Heights Fire Department for decades.
