The Northwest Herald reported on a fire that broke out Thursday night in downtown McHenry, caused by downed power lines during the season's first major winter storm. According to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, both a sports bar and a nearby residence were affected.
Firefighters responded to Windy City Wings, located at 1266 N. Green St., around 9 p.m. Thursday after reports of flames coming from the building. Upon arrival, they found sparks and flames shooting from an arched utility pole, with wires falling onto the front of the structure.
Fire Battalion Chief Mike Majercik described the scene as "like a fireworks show." He explained that while ComEd was cutting off the power, the fire spread into the building, fueled by strong winds that made it difficult to control. Crews quickly shifted focus to saving the adjacent business, which ultimately succeeded.
The fire completely destroyed the bar and grill, but the neighboring establishment remained intact. The blaze was classified as a third alarm, with emergency crews working tirelessly to contain the situation.
