It was just after 4:30 AM on June 27, 2011, when the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a house fire in the 500 block of Dawes Avenue. The alarm quickly escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm as crews arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames. According to reports, the family managed to escape unharmed thanks to their working smoke detectors. As the first responders approached, they noticed the fire had already consumed both floors in the rear of the two-story home. The Daily Herald later reported that the homeowners were awakened by the alarms and were able to evacuate safely. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company’s spokesperson, Craig Eldridge, mentioned that the house sustained significant damage due to the intense fire. Photographer Stephen Wilcox captured several images that vividly depict the severity of the situation. One photo shows the back corner of the house, where the flames had taken hold of both the lower and first floors. Another image highlights the double sliding glass doors in the middle of the lower level, which were surrounded by fire consuming the deck extending across the back of the house. Wilcox also provided detailed insights into the incident. He noted that the point of origin appeared to be near the steps on the right side of the double doors, close to where a cooking pit had been used earlier. This area also housed three propane tanks, which reportedly exploded, significantly fueling the fire's rapid spread. The family was fortunate enough to escape through these doors. The firefighting efforts were intense, with crews deploying 2.5-inch handlines to initially suppress the flames before bringing in a tower ladder to target the roof and attic areas. Wilcox highlighted the challenges faced due to the limited water supply in the area, with the main lines only being four inches in diameter. This necessitated careful water management to ensure resources were used effectively. Despite these constraints, the firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control. However, the structure took a severe beating, with both the second floor and part of the roof collapsing during the firefighting operation. By sunrise, the extent of the damage was painfully clear. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported among either the firefighters or the civilians involved. Looking back at the photos, it’s clear how critical a full 360-degree assessment of the fire scene can be. Without it, crucial details like the origin and progression of the fire might have been overlooked. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thorough safety checks and strategic planning in firefighting operations.
