India continues to face frequent power outages, with over 4,000 villages still lacking access to electricity. Despite ambitious plans to achieve full electrification by May 2018, the goal remains unfulfilled. Urban areas fare better, yet the broader picture remains disheartening. To address this challenge, the nation must explore alternative energy sources to illuminate rural regions.
The Sun Offers a Solution to India's Energy Woes
Solar energy presents a promising resolution to India's energy quandary. Installing residential solar panels on rooftops could provide a feasible and swift remedy for rural India, home to over 60% of the population. Solar panels designed for homes can either connect to mini-grids or operate independently, enabling electricity access in areas that remain unconnected.
Progress in the Rooftop Solar Sector
Since 2013, rooftop solar installations in India have gradually expanded, rising from 72 MW annually to 227 MW. Policies offering customs duty concessions, tax incentives, and excise duty exemptions have spurred this growth. However, further measures are needed to bolster domestic solar panel manufacturers. Currently, India relies heavily on China for photovoltaic cells, essential for solar panels. By 2030, India anticipates importing $42 billion worth of solar equipment, equivalent to 100 GW of installed capacity.
Despite this reliance, states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra are making strides in harnessing solar power. The government has prioritized residential solar installations, attracting foreign investments totaling approximately $1.5 billion. Net metering facilities are available in 30 of 36 states and union territories, along with a 30% subsidy for residential and non-profit institutional investors. These initiatives have fueled growth in the residential rooftop solar sector and expanded the solar industry.
Solar vs. Diesel Generators
Moreover, recent research indicates that solar-generated electricity costs less than diesel generators, traditionally used in areas with limited or no grid connectivity. According to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), diesel generators produce electricity at rates of 15-20 units, while rooftop solar energy costs around INR 5-6 per unit. Studies conducted in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan confirm solar panels' cost-effectiveness.
Implementing proposals from NGOs, such as mandating solar rooftop installations in residential societies, banning diesel generators due to their high costs and environmental pollution, alongside supporting mini-grid and off-grid solar systems in households and local communities, could accelerate electrification across India. Expanding solar panel production and the consumer market would lower prices, making solar energy more accessible.

The Centre for Science and Environment is developing a website featuring a solar calculator to help individuals easily estimate their energy costs with solar panels. These advancements, combined with the aforementioned strategies, underscore the inevitability of solar energy addressing India's energy challenges.
