Extra alarm fire in McHenry 12-20-12

The Northwest Herald reported on a fire that broke out in downtown McHenry on Thursday night. According to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, the incident was caused by power lines that were brought down by strong winds during the season’s first winter storm. The fire affected both a sports bar and a residence. Firefighters were called to Windy City Wings, located at 1266 N. Green St., around 9 p.m. Thursday after reports of flames coming from the building. Upon arrival, firefighters found sparks and flames originating from an arched utility pole with downed wires resting on the front of the structure. “Everything looked like a fireworks show,” said Battalion Chief Mike Majercik. “While ComEd was cutting off the power, the fire spread into the building. The high winds made it really difficult to bring under control.” Despite the intense conditions, crews worked quickly to protect the adjacent business. Unfortunately, the bar and grill were completely destroyed, but the neighboring establishment was saved. Jeff Rudolph, a local photographer, shared some images from the scene. He described the event as a third alarm fire, with a large two-story corner bar and grill being fully consumed by the flames. A McHenry Township Fire Department engine was seen in front of the structure, and additional shots highlight the intensity of the blaze and the ongoing response.
