Working fire in Chicago, 12-9-16 (part 2)

I just got back from covering a working fire here in Chicago on December 9, 2016, at 6507 South Parnell Avenue. It was intense and I managed to snap some photos that really capture the grit and determination of our firefighters. The first image shows firefighters scaling an aerial ladder under thick plumes of smoke. You can see the focus in their eyes as they work to contain the blaze. Another shot highlights a firefighter expertly venting the roof of the structure, a critical step in managing the fire. In another photo, you’ll notice the same technique being applied by another brave soul on the scene. One of my favorite shots captures a firefighter standing tall after battling the flames, his soot-covered face telling the story of a long and grueling fight. There’s also a powerful image of several firefighters, their faces streaked with dirt and exhaustion, but still standing strong together. And finally, one last photo gives a glimpse into the aftermath—a stark reminder of the destruction left behind. These moments remind me why I do what I do—to document these incredible individuals who put themselves on the line every day for the safety of others.
