Northbrook technical rescue 3-18-14

Larry Shapiro sent this update: This morning, before 11 AM, Northbrook fire units were dispatched to 1751 West Lake Cook Road in Deerfield following a report of a worker who had fallen 15 feet into a concrete well located next to a building. When emergency crews arrived, they found a window washer who had been working above a steel grate covering the opening. Unfortunately, an angle iron that supported one side of the grate gave way, causing the worker to plummet into the hole. Due to the complexity of the situation, a Technical Rescue Team (TRT) response was requested. Firefighters who descended into the well carefully stabilized the injured worker and secured him in a Stokes basket. Meanwhile, the rope technicians set up the necessary rigging to hoist the victim back to ground level. Attached are several photos capturing the rescue effort. The first image shows Northbrook Tower 12 positioned directly over the concrete well where the accident occurred. Another photo highlights a ladder being placed over the hole to facilitate access for the rescue team. You can also see the MABAS Division 3 TRT squad preparing for action in one of the images. In another shot, you'll notice the ladder being securely fastened in place. Further photos depict firefighters on the ground supplying essential equipment to their colleagues working with the injured worker, as well as the preparation of rigging to lift the patient from the depths. One image captures the moment when the Stokes basket is successfully pulled up from the hole, and another shows firefighters carefully carrying the patient to a waiting gurney. There’s also a close-up of the angle iron that broke free from its support, and a view looking down into the area where the unfortunate incident took place.
