New progress in research and development of new green environmental protection plating technology

According to the China Chemical Industry News, China began to control the use of hexavalent chromium from March 1 this year. The traditional hexavalent chromium plating process is urgently needed to develop new alternative technologies due to pollution emissions. The environmentally-friendly trivalent chromium plating process developed by Zhang Junyan, a researcher at the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication of Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made substantial progress. The researchers selected an excellent trivalent chromium plating solution system and obtained a thick chrome coating with a uniform white surface and a thickness of more than 30 μm, which laid the foundation for the industrial application of the new environmentally friendly plating technology. Experts believe that the successful development and continuous improvement of the electroplating process will be expected to replace the traditional hexavalent chromium plating process.

Electroplated chrome plating has been widely used in the electrical and electronic, household goods and mechanical processing industries due to its excellent wear and corrosion resistance. However, in the traditional process of electroplating hard chrome, the toxic hexavalent chromium is contained in the waste water, exhaust gas and coating. To this end, governments have adopted certain restrictions and strict regulations on the limits of hexavalent chromium in wastewater discharge.

In the face of this urgent development situation, it is imperative to adopt a green and efficient new plating process to replace the hexavalent chrome plating and apply it to the protection and decoration of electrical and electronic parts. Due to the excellent performance of the chrome plating itself and the many advantages of the trivalent chromium plating process, the research on the trivalent chromium plating process is the most active and promising in many technologies that replace the hexavalent chromium plating process.

Zhang Junyan, the research group of Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been working on the development of environmentally friendly trivalent chromium plating since 2005. During the two-year process of trivalent chromium plating, the project has made significant progress. Firstly, through the theoretical analysis and trial and error, the research team selected an excellent trivalent chromium plating system from a wide variety of plating systems, and obtained excellent trivalent chromium plating in the laboratory. In addition, adjustment and analysis methods for the main components of the plating solution were established, and a test method for the life of the plating solution was established.

The research group also focused on the problem of thick plating of trivalent chromium, which has been plaguing the electroplating workers. The pilot test with a bath volume of 200 liters was successfully carried out, and trivalent chromium plating thick chromium was realized in different sizes of copper tubes. A magnified plating test was carried out on the brass sheet to obtain a thick chrome plating having a uniform white surface and a thickness exceeding 30 μm.
