Algonquin Box Alarm 9-29-12

From the Northwest Herald.

Cole Ryals was at Algonquin Sub Shop on Saturday when a panicked man rushed in and asked him to call 911. The man had just seen a house on Filip Street engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising into the sky.

“This was my first time ever calling the police, and I didn’t know what to do,” said Ryals, 18, who was taken aback by the sudden situation.

The two-story home at 5 Filip St. was fully ablaze when firefighters from the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived at 6:36 p.m. Witnesses reported that flames were shooting out of the roof, making it clear that the fire was spreading rapidly.

Firefighters initially entered the building but were forced to evacuate when they feared the roof might collapse. They then worked from the outside to put out the fire, remaining on scene until about 9:30 p.m.

No one was inside the house when the fire started. Fortunately, two cats were found safe and were handed over to the homeowners when they returned later that night.

There were no injuries reported, and emergency crews from Crystal Lake, Cary, Huntley, Carpentersville, and McHenry County Animal Control all responded to the scene.
