From the Northwest Herald.
Cole Ryals was at Algonquin Sub Shop on Saturday when a panicked man rushed in and asked him to call 911. The man had just seen a house on Filip Street engulfed in flames, sending thick smoke into the sky.
Ryals, 18, said it was his first time ever calling emergency services. “I didn’t know what to do,†he admitted. “I just followed the man’s instructions.â€
The two-story home was fully ablaze by the time firefighters from the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived at 6:36 p.m. Flames were visible through the roof, and neighbors reported seeing fire shooting out of the attic.
Firefighters initially entered the structure but were forced to evacuate after concerns arose about the roof collapsing. They then focused on extinguishing the fire from the outside, remaining on scene until around 9:30 p.m.
No one was inside the house at the time of the fire. Two cats were found safe and later returned to their owners when they arrived home. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Emergency crews from Crystal Lake, Cary, Huntley, Carpentersville, and McHenry County Animal Control also responded to the incident.
