**Compressor Oil - What Color Should It Be?**
Published by Filter Element Store on October 04, 2023
Have you ever asked yourself, “What color should my compressor oil be?†The answer is simple: when it’s new, it should be a light yellow or amber in color. While this might seem like an unusual question, checking the color of your compressor oil is a crucial part of maintenance. Operators should always note the oil’s color when it's first added and then monitor it regularly as part of their maintenance schedule.
Recently, we sent a customer a batch of PAG 46 compressor oil, which is a popular replacement for brands like Ultra Coolant. When they received the product, they were confused about its color. As shown in the image provided, our PAG 46 oil has a clear, yellowish-amber tint — exactly what you’d expect from a fresh, high-quality lubricant.
However, the customer was concerned because the oil in their compressor looked completely black. They had recently had a service technician change the oil, but the sample they tested was dark and dirty. After further discussion, they shared more details:
> "The service guy came out last Friday and confirmed that the oil should be light in color. I took a picture of the OEM coolant they used. He also grabbed the old oil. He should have known better. Look at the picture of the old oil he put in."
The oil they were using was heavily contaminated and likely re-used, which could lead to serious damage over time. This highlights the importance of regular maintenance and knowing what to look for in your compressor oil. If your oil is much darker than when it was new, smells burnt, or looks cloudy, it may be time for a change. Milky or cloudy oil can indicate water or coolant contamination, which can harm your system.
To avoid such issues, many operators choose to purchase high-quality aftermarket compressor oil, like our Made in USA option, and handle the oil change themselves. This not only saves money but also ensures you’re using clean, fresh oil every time.
We sell top-quality, reliable compressor oil and are not affiliated with any original equipment manufacturers or trademarks.
