Former Elgin fire engine is going to Chile

The Courier-News recently published an article about a retired Elgin fire engine that's being sent to a fire department in Chile, as part of the city's long-standing sister city relationship. The vehicle has been sitting on John Tobin’s driveway in West Dundee since October 2023, waiting for its next chapter. Tobin, a longtime fire equipment dealer, has been working to get the 1996 Seagrave back in shape for service in Cauquenes. The engine was previously stationed at Elgin Fire Station 5 on Villa Street and last saw active duty in 2012. Originally purchased by the city for $228,000, it would cost far more to fully restore. Tobin has already done significant work, including re-strapping the fuel tank, adding "Cauquenes" lettering to the cab, replacing the pump shift and gauges, and even installing a bell. Elgin Fire Lieutenant Bob Bedard, who helped facilitate the donation, says the truck is still in good condition and far superior to what the Cauquenes fire department currently uses—mostly pickup trucks equipped with basic pumps. The engine came into Bedard’s hands after the city acquired a new ladder truck, and as part of the deal, the city received $10,000 to trade in the old engine. A company representative then stepped in to donate the vehicle to the Sister Cities initiative. This isn’t the first time Elgin firefighters have shared their resources with Cauquenes. In February 2011, a group from Elgin traveled to Rancagua for a goodwill mission, helping train local public safety workers on the use of donated firefighting and rescue equipment from several area departments. Then, in January 2013, Elgin sent a shipment of outdated but functional gear—including fire hoses, turnout gear, helmets, boots, nozzles, electronics, and even a fire engine—with the Chileans covering the shipping costs. Bedard had to personally raise $20,000 to cover the transportation expenses, as no city funds are being used for this effort. He also mentioned that the Chilean firefighters have expressed interest in learning more about techniques like structural shoring, rope operations, and vehicle extractions—areas where they lack practical training tools due to the scarcity of used cars in the region. This donation represents not just a transfer of equipment, but a meaningful exchange of knowledge and support between two communities across the ocean.
