Six members of the Hudson Fire Department from western McLean County were injured, with one losing their life, while responding to a multi-vehicle accident on a snowy interstate near Hudson on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. when a southbound semi-truck carrying cars lost control and struck three emergency vehicles, including those from the Hudson Fire Department and the Illinois State Police.
Chris Brown, a 39-year-old volunteer firefighter from the Hudson Community Fire Protection District, was fatally injured in the crash. According to Coroner Beth Kimmerling, Brown suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his head, chest, and pelvis after being struck by the truck. He was described as a dedicated member of the community and a full-time firefighter with the Bloomington Fire Department. Brown was married and the father of two young children.
Hudson Fire Chief Dan Hite expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling Brown "a member of our Hudson family." He emphasized the emotional impact on the entire department, stating that the tragedy has left a lasting mark on everyone involved. "We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones," Hite said. "His contributions to the community and the fire department will not be forgotten."
The names of the other injured firefighters have not yet been released. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident, which occurred under challenging weather conditions on Interstate 39.
This tragic event has brought the community together in mourning and support for the affected families. As the fire department works through this difficult time, many are remembering Chris Brown not just as a firefighter, but as a devoted husband, father, and friend.
Thanks, Chris. Your service will never be forgotten.
