Teng Xinting, the general manager of Zhejiang Keystone Valves Co., Ltd., is planning a special trip from Wenzhou to the Longyou Industrial Park in Zhangzhou City in the near future. The purpose of this visit is to begin preparatory work for a new valve project covering 100 acres with a total investment of 150 million yuan. As space constraints become more pressing, many valve manufacturers in Wenzhou are now looking to expand and upgrade their operations through technological innovation and industrial transformation.
Wenzhou is recognized as the largest pump and valve manufacturing hub in China, with its pump and valve output accounting for over one-third of the national total. Yongjia County, often referred to as the "Hometown of China’s Pump Valves," has long held a prominent position in the industry. It has not only become a key growth area for Zhejiang’s regional economy but also been designated as a national Torch Program base. With 548 pump companies, including 125 large-scale enterprises, and over 300 types of valves with more than 3,000 specifications, Yongjia is the largest production base in China for pump and valve products. In 2005 alone, the county generated nearly 8.5 billion yuan in output value, with exports reaching 150 million U.S. dollars, capturing over 25% of the domestic market share.
During the second China (Yongjia) Valve & Pump Fair in 2006, industry experts visited several leading companies such as Chaoda County, Xuanda Group, Zhongquan Pumps, and Liangjing Group. They praised the quality and innovation level of the local valve industry. However, despite its strong foundation, the industry has also acknowledged gaps compared to international leaders, particularly in areas like technological innovation, high-end talent, and advanced management. Experts from the China National Machinery Industry Federation emphasized that to sustain growth, Yongjia must focus on key technologies in major national equipment projects.
In response, companies have started investing heavily in independent innovation. Key enterprises have established research and development systems, combining internal efforts with academic and industry collaboration. This has led to a surge in new product development. For example, Liangjing Group recently introduced two groundbreaking products—supercritical traps and rapid vacuum on-line sampling systems—that match global standards and can replace imported alternatives. Xuanda Industrial Group developed a high-flow ultra-high-temperature sulfuric acid pump and a high-temperature control butterfly valve, both of which were recognized as major provincial science and technology projects. Their modified polypropylene lining valves offer ten times the lifespan of stainless steel valves at half the cost.
Bethel Company has also focused on developing high-tech products such as multi-function hydraulic butterfly valves and large-caliber thermal power plant valves. These innovations have been quickly applied in the market. According to Ye Jixuan, president of the Yongjia Pump and Valve Industry Association, the next step for companies is to form alliances and move toward centralized production, sales, and technical collaboration, aiming to integrate into larger groups.
The local government is actively supporting the industry’s transformation by promoting technological upgrades, hosting events like the China (Yongjia) Pump and Valve Expo, and bringing together domestic and international industry insights. By the end of the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan,†it is expected that Yongjia’s total industrial output from pumps will reach 20 billion yuan, with over 30% coming from exports, solidifying its position as a global valve manufacturing center.
