A 103-meter-long, 19-meter-wide steel box girder weighing over 1,300 tons has been successfully constructed and launched at Wuchang Shipyard. This massive structure is the main span of the widening project for the Chongqing Shibanpo Yangtze River Bridge, marking a significant achievement in bridge engineering. With its size and weight, it holds the record as the largest single-section steel box girder in the world.
The renovation project aims to ease traffic congestion in downtown Chongqing by constructing a new bridge of the same type 5 meters upstream from the existing one. To maintain the smooth flow of the Yangtze River, the bridge’s main span measures 330 meters, making it a pioneering feat in the history of T-shaped steel-concrete composite bridges. The 330-meter span consists of concrete sections at both ends, with a 110-meter steel box girder in the middle. This steel box girder is divided into three parts: two 4-meter sections that are integrated with the concrete parts, and a central main beam section measuring 103 meters.
Wuchang Shipyard leveraged its advanced technology, infrastructure, and transportation capabilities to complete the project with remarkable precision. After construction, the error in the 103-meter main beam was only 3 millimeters, showcasing the shipyard’s technical excellence.
Due to its immense size, the steel box girder could not be transported by land. Instead, it was designed to "sail" along the 1,286-kilometer waterway from Wuhan to Chongqing. To facilitate this, the shipyard transformed the girder into a floating vessel, equipped with a "spoon" at the front and navigation lights and tethers on top. A full sealing inspection was conducted to ensure the integrity of the box during the journey.
According to the transportation plan, the steel box girder will arrive in Chongqing 20 days after its launch. Upon arrival, it will be turned 90 degrees using on-site tools, then lifted by a large floating crane and embedded into the main span. Finally, it will be welded together, completing the critical connection. Industry experts have noted that the entire process—from manufacturing and launching to floating, steering, and on-site hoisting—represents a rare and remarkable achievement in bridge construction, both in China and globally.
