Wuchang Shipyard was born "the world's first beam"

A 103-meter-long, 19-meter-wide, and over 1,300-ton steel box girder was successfully constructed and launched at Wuchang Shipyard. This massive structure is the main span for the widening and reconstruction project of the Chongqing Shibanpo Yangtze River Bridge. According to experts, this single-section steel box girder is the largest in terms of size and weight globally. The project involves building a new bridge of the same design 5 meters upstream of the existing one, aiming to reduce traffic congestion in downtown Chongqing. To maintain the flow of the Yangtze River’s main channel, the new bridge features a 330-meter main span, which represents a significant milestone in the history of T-shaped steel-concrete composite bridges worldwide. The 330-meter span is made of concrete on both ends, with a 110-meter steel box girder in the middle. The steel box girder is divided into three sections: two 4-meter segments that are integrated with the concrete parts, and a central 103-meter main beam section. Wuchang Shipyard, leveraging its advanced technology, site facilities, and transportation capabilities, completed the project with remarkable precision. The final error in the 103-meter main beam section was just 3 mm, showcasing the high level of engineering accuracy achieved. Due to its enormous size, the steel box girder could only be transported by water, allowing it to "sail" from Wuhan to Chongqing. To facilitate this journey, the shipyard designed the girder as a floating vessel, equipped with a bow-like structure, navigation lights, and tethers. A full sealing inspection was conducted to ensure the integrity of the steel box during the 1,286-kilometer voyage along the Yangtze River. According to the transportation plan, the girder will take about 20 days to reach Chongqing after launch. Upon arrival, it will be turned 90 degrees using on-site tools, then lifted by a large floating crane and embedded into the main span. Finally, it will be welded together, completing the "dragon's head" of the bridge. Industry experts have noted that the entire process—manufacturing, launching, floating, steering, and on-site hoisting—of such a large and heavy steel box girder is rare in both Chinese and global bridge construction history.
