Li Fuchun, the vice mayor of Changchun City, shared insights with a reporter from Ta Kung Pao about the city's crucial position in China's automotive industry. He pointed out that while Changchun has a solid foundation in the auto parts sector, it still lags behind the rapid growth of the整车 (whole vehicle) industry. This mismatch has resulted in a 1.8 billion yuan gap in the auto parts industry over the past five years.
According to Li Fuchun, Changchun is home to the largest and most technologically advanced automotive parts production base in China, offering a wide range of products. Many of its components, such as castings, forging blanks, wheels, wiring harnesses, and certain machined parts, are competitive in the global market and hold significant market shares. By the end of the fourth quarter of 2005, the city had 330 automotive and parts manufacturing companies, including two major automobile manufacturers, 17 modified vehicle producers, one motorcycle manufacturer, and 310 spare parts companies. This diverse industrial structure highlights Changchun's strong potential for further development in the auto sector.
With the right strategies and investments, the city can bridge the existing gap and strengthen its role as a key player in the national and international automotive supply chain.
