Linear Technology Corporation has launched two new independent dual-input linear battery chargers: the LTC4076 and LTC4077. These devices are designed to charge a single-cell Li-Ion battery using either a wall adapter or a USB power source. Both chargers employ a constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) charging method, with programmable charging currents up to 950mA when using a wall adapter and up to 650mA when connected via USB. They also automatically detect and manage the presence of each input voltage, ensuring seamless operation.
The LTC4076 features a programmable C/x charge termination function, giving users more flexibility in managing the charging process. In contrast, the LTC4077 offers a fixed C/10 charge termination, which is ideal for applications that require consistent and straightforward charging. Additionally, the LTC4076 provides a fixed C or C/5 USB charging current option for low-power USB operations through the HPWR pin, while the LTC4077 allows for programmable C or C/x current settings, offering greater customization.
These chargers are well-suited for a wide range of portable electronics, including PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, lightweight medical devices, test equipment, and large-screen mobile phones. Their versatility makes them an excellent choice for designers looking for efficient and compact charging solutions.
With a final floating voltage accuracy of ±0.6%, the LTC4076 and LTC4077 incorporate a patented thermal regulation circuit that ensures safe and efficient charging without the risk of overheating. This feature allows for maximum charge rates while maintaining system safety. The devices are highly configurable, requiring only a single resistor to set the charging current for both the wall adapter and USB inputs, as well as the charge termination current.
As standalone chargers, they include essential functions such as trickle charge for pre-checking the battery, under-voltage lockout to prevent damage, automatic recharge, and charge status indication. A “power present†output signal helps monitor the availability of the external power source, adding convenience for system designers.
Available in a low-profile 10-lead 3 x 3mm DFN package (only 0.75mm tall), these ICs eliminate the need for external MOSFETs, sense resistors, or isolation diodes, resulting in a compact solution with a total footprint of less than 25mm². This makes them ideal for space-constrained designs.
To further enhance power efficiency, the LTC4076 and LTC4077 consume less than 6μA from the battery terminal in standby mode and less than 2μA in shutdown mode, helping to preserve battery life. They are rated for operation across a wide temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, making them suitable for a variety of environments.
