Linear Technology Corporation has launched a pair of independent dual-input linear battery chargers: the LTC4076 and LTC4077. These devices are designed to charge a single-cell lithium-ion battery from either a wall adapter or a USB power source. Both chargers utilize a constant current/constant voltage charging algorithm, with programmable charging currents up to 950mA when using a wall adapter and up to 650mA when connected via USB. They also automatically detect the presence of each input voltage, ensuring seamless operation.
The LTC4076 includes a programmable C/x charge current termination feature, while the LTC4077 offers a fixed C/10 termination. Additionally, the LTC4076 provides a fixed C or C/5 USB charging current option for low-power USB applications through the HPWR pin, whereas the LTC4077 allows for programmable C or C/x low-power USB charging via the same pin. These chips are ideal for a wide range of portable electronics, such as PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, lightweight medical devices, and large-screen smartphones.
With a final floating voltage accuracy of ±0.6%, the LTC4076 and LTC4077 incorporate a patented thermal regulation circuit that prevents overheating while maximizing charging efficiency. Their flexibility is further enhanced by the ability to program key parameters—such as wall adapter and USB charging currents, as well as charge termination current—using just a single resistor. As standalone chargers, they also support trickle charging for pre-checking batteries, under-voltage lockout, automatic recharging, charge status indication, and a "power present" output signal that confirms the availability of a power source.
These ICs come in a compact 10-lead 3 x 3mm DFN package with a low profile of only 0.75mm. The design eliminates the need for external MOSFETs, sense resistors, or isolation diodes, resulting in a total solution footprint of less than 25mm². To help conserve battery life, the LTC4076 and LTC4077 consume less than 6μA in standby mode and less than 2μA in shutdown mode. They are rated for operation across a wide temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. Available in 1,000-piece quantities, the cost starts at $1.88 per unit (subject to change).
